This paper investigates how structural changes in Czech society brought about by the transition from the centrally planned state-socialist regime towards market-based capitalism, which impacts individual opportunities and choices. The intersectional approach and concept of social capital allows us to interpret employment trajectories of women in the Czech Republic in its historical as well as biographical contexts.

Fungování každého společenského systému je podmíněno interpersonální a institucionální důvěrou, která upravuje vztahy mezi lidmi a přispívá k demokratickému uspořádání v zemi. Důvěra v orgány činné v trestním řízení, tedy konkrétně v policii a soudy, představuje v současnosti jedno z hlavních výzkumných témat. Článek si klade za cíl zhodnotit vývoj důvěry v tyto instituce v mezinárodní perspektivě, a představit důvěru jako vícedimenzionální koncept.

The article documents the development of life satisfaction in four transitional Central European countries since 1991, in comparison with Germany and Austria. After presentation of data sources and the overview of the literature regarding the effect of transition on life satisfaction, surveys of European Values Study 1991, 1999 and 2008 are analysed together with macroeconomic data.

This article presents individual outcomes of the grant project and its specific research into children’s conceptions of internet addiction, gambling and religious sects. The qualitative research objective was to identify selected social pathology phenomena in the young population aged 10 to 15 years. There were in total ten participants recruited from two primary schools. Analysis of the three most interesting cases revealed elementary aspects of the genesis of children’s conceptions.

Instituted in 2004, the Czech Republic research assessment has since changed on an annual basis. In this paper I examine how researchers in the Czech Republic negotiate research assessment. Using the concept of epistemic living spaces (Felt & Fochler, 2010; Felt, 2009), I first set in context the Czech research assessment system and second explore the micro-politics of resistance in which researchers engage in their daily conduct.

This article contributes to the debate about the impact of the transition to subjective well-being. After reviewing the relevant literature the authors draw on the surveys of the European Values Study between 1991 and 2008 to describe the trends in life satisfaction in 13 ‘Western’ and 11 ‘Eastern’ countries. The analysis finds that life satisfaction levels in transition countries have come to approach those in the West: the ‘rather unhappy’ 1990s were followed by the ‘rather happy’ 2000s.
