Diversity of childcare practices: a sequential approach

BARBARA METTETAL

The concept of intensive parenting, characterized by significant time investments in childcare, has gained substantial attention in academic discourse. This study aims to enhance our understanding of parenting time by examining its dynamics within the daily lives of Czech parents, leveraging time use data from the Czech Household Panel Survey.

To appreciate the diversity of intensive parenting models, a sequential approach proves useful, considering various forms of childcare and their intersection with other activities. This research investigates whether and how the sequencing of childcare activities offers insights into the multiplicity of intensive parenting practices.

Moreover, the study acknowledges the impact of demographic factors such as gender, education level, and the age of children on parenting time. Notable disparities exist in childcare time across different genders and educational levels, as well as based on the child's age. A sequential analysis provides a deeper understanding of these social differentiations.

Barbara Mettetal is a student from École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (Lyon, France), currently interning at the Value Orientations in Society department of the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Science.

Seminar will be held in English.
