Sociologický ústav AV ČR, v.v.i., a katedra sociologie Institutu sociologických studií FSV UK si Vás dovolují pozvat na jarní cyklus Čtvrtečních sociologických seminářů.

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? This has become a major problem of many parents throughout the western world. Hesitant, lacking scientific knowledge and concern from medical professionals, they desperately search for answers to their concerns. These are the silent, invisible masses that the anti-vaccination movement tries get through to.

The presentation will show the rise and climax of the anti-vaccination movement in Poland. This movement will be shown through the lens of its discursive strategies, including public visibility of the discourse, types of knowledge produced, resources it uses and the way it validates itself or tries to be legitimized. Also, some institutional solutions and legal regulations both from Poland and other European states will be shown as a background and backlash for the ever-growing powers of the anti-vaccination movements.

Dr Paulina Polak works at the Institute of Sociology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. She studies the problems and phenomena of the public sphere, with a particular focus on healthcare, health policies and the dynamics of power in the healthcare system.  Her current research project revolves around the marginalized, invisible and aspiring groups trying to find their ways into and gain power in the Polish healthcare system.

Seminar will be held in English. No registration is needed.
