The article describes and analyses the first two sociological studies on the poor in Prague, which took place in the 1920s and 1930s. The first study was initiated by Alice Masaryk in the American tradition of “social surveys”, and the second was undertaken by Otakar Machotka, a member of the Prague sociological school, using more modern means.

Social inequalities have increased in the Czech Republic since the collapse of communism. While this has not led to an intensification of territorial inequalities, yet the analysis of the Prague metropolitan area presented in this chapter shows that pressure toward socio-spatial inequalities might increase in the near future.

About this book
Topic: politics (and political attitudes)
The main objective of this paper is to draw attention to the influence of social norms on housing market behaviour. The research is based on an in-depth qualitative study of first-time buyers in the Czech Republic. We found systemic deviations from economically rational behaviour (as defined by mainstream housing economic theory) that stem from the influence of a dominant housing social norm about what constitutes the ‘right’ housing tenure.

Energy is not merely a technological field, it also influences and is influenced by the wider social context. From various perspectives energy impacts the lives of people and it shapes people, not just those who work in the field of energy, in various ways. This publication focuses specifically on how these processes operate from the perspective of gender equality.
Topic: gender
The qualitative study is focused on the issue of equal access of women (and men) into managerial and decision-making positions in a social enterprise and conventional one in the Czech Republic. The results of the study reflect a lack of focus on gender equality, low sensitivity to gender based discrimination, recurrence of gender stereotypes and the lack of internal policies (formal procedures) to promote women in leadership positions in the surveyed firms.

Based on qualitative research of women that cared in the past or care now for their frail elderly mothers, this article aims to describe and explain some of the factors leading to the predominance of women in informal care for the elderly. The article builds on Sandra Harding’s and Joan W. Scott’s concept of gender. Their concept defines gender as a category operating at multiple interconnected levels.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Biomedical research increasingly relies on long-term studies involving use and re-use of biological samples and data stored in large repositories or "biobanks" over lengthy periods, often raising questions about whether and when a re-consenting process should be activated. We sought to investigate the views on re-consent of participants in a longitudinal biobank. METHODS:

This article presents an analysis of the construct validity of the Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) scale measured on a nationally representative sample of respondents in the Czech Republic. The authors – adhering to a paradigm of internationally comparative research – test whether the RWA scale, which was originally developed in the North American cultural milieu, can serve as a valid measurement instrument in a significantly different cultural environment.
