The Institute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in cooperation with Respekt institut, cordially invites you to a seminar by

Anne Therese Gullburg (Senior research Fellow at CICERO, the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research in Oslo, Norway)

on the theme of

Lobbying and Democracy: The Case of Climate Policy.

The seminar will take place Thursday, April 14 at 10am at the Academic Conference Centre (Husova 4, Prague 1). The seminar will be held in English.

Abstract:

Lobbying may - under certain conditions - contribute to democracy. I reflect upon first, whether lobbying is compatible with good governance, second, under what conditions lobbying can contribute to democracy, third, under what conditions lobbying can undermine democracy, and fourth, what can be done to deal with the dilemma that lobbying and interest group participation may undermine democracy. The examples will be taken from EU and Norwegian climate policy.

Note that this is the second in a series of four seminnars by international experts on lobbying reform that will be organized by the Institute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and by Respekt institut.

The third seminar will be lead by Raj Chari (Trinity College Dublin) on April 21 at 10am in the AKC, and the last seminar will be lead by Craig Holman (A government affairs lobbyist at Public Citizen, a watchdog group in the USA) on May 12, 10am at AKC.
