Národní kontaktní centrum – ženy a věda (dále jen NKC-ŽV) bylo ustaveno při Sociologickém ústavu AV ČR, v.v.i. v roce 2001 na základě projektu OK 457 (2001-2004) a jeho činnost se dále rozvíjela v letech 2005-2008 v rámci navazujícího projektu 1P OK 459. NKC-ŽV je unikátním projektem na podporu žen ve vědě a od druhé fáze řešení i začínajících vědců a vědkyň. V letech 2004-2008 se dále úspěšně rozvíjelo zapojení NKC-ŽV do mezinárodních aktivit v oblasti genderové rovnosti ve vědě, a to formou přednášek na konferencích, členství v poradních orgánech a pracovních skupinách Evropské komise (Expert Advisory Group Science in Society, Helsinki Group for Women in Science, Stocktaking of 10 years' activities on women in science Conference Advisory Group), účastí na mezinárodních projektech a realizací mezinárodních konferencí. Na úrovni ČR se NKC-ŽV ve zvyšující míře dařilo rozvíjet a posouvat debaty na politické úrovni o postavení žen a mladých lidí ve vědě, předkládat návrhy opatření zainteresovaným aktérům (AV ČR, univerzity, grantové agentury) a vstupovat do debat o směřování aktivit na podporu žen a mladých lidí ve vědě. NKC-ŽV rozvíjelo konkrétní podpůrné projekty, jejichž cílem bylo představovat úspěšné a talentované vědkyně, poskytovat konkrétní podporu v souvislosti s účastí na evropském výzkumu i řešením otázek genderové rovnosti, a zviditelňovat danou problematiku pro odbornou i širší veřejnost. Dále se zapojovalo do výzkumných aktivit na poli feministických vědních studií a postavení žen a mladých lidí ve vědě. Projekt NKC-ŽV je jedinečným projektem svého druhu v ČR a jeho aktivity se průběhu let utvářely v návaznosti na vývoj situace v ČR i EU. NKC-ŽV představuje pro zahraniční partnery jednu z mála ustavených organizací v oblasti postavení žen a mladých lidí ve vědě ve střední a východní Evropě. Ve spolupráci s MŠMT ČR sehrával důležitou roli při zapojení ČR do širší sítě evropských a celosvětových aktivit na podporu žen a mladých lidí ve vědě.
Hlavním cílem projektu bylo rozvíjet koncepci a aktivity Národního kontaktního centra – ženy a věda po dvou základních liniích vyvinutých v první fázi projektu (2001-2004): 1. přispívat k formování politik rovných příležitostí ve vědě a výzkumu v ČR a poskytovat konkrétní asistenční služby ženám vědkyním, 2. přispívat k budování znalostní báze v ČR týkající se genderové rovnosti ve vědě a výzkumu v ČR a v mezinárodním srovnání a začít budovat obor feministických epistemologií a produkce vědění. Projekt tedy celkově přispíval k řešení otázky postavení žen a mladých lidí ve výzkumu a vedl k podnícení diskurzu o této problematice na úrovni státní správy, univerzitních a akademických pracovišť, ve výzkumné komunitě a průnikem do médií vedl k prosazení těchto otázek v širším společenském kontextu.

Publication Paths through the Labyrinth. On the Scientific Profession, Private Life and Their Inter-connections discusses the concept of work and life balance in relation to scientific career of women and men. 5 authors discuss discourses, framings and situations that arise around the WLB issues in science.
The author analyses shifts in the discursive treatment of work-life balance issues from feminist approaches to an equal opportunities-based approach based on the argument of economic advantages and waste of talent. Using the examples of scientific mobility, publication activity and career progress she shows that the current measures adopted do not address the issue of work-life balance and implicitly build on traditional ideas about the roles of men and women in society.
The paper is in a popularization way concerned with the problem of connection of family and work life in biographies of scientists. Based on examples from early-stage scientists lives it points to possible problems that arise at the beginning of a scientific career in relation to the work-life balance.
The paper is based on research of current work – life balance friendly instruments in chosen scientific institutions. The authors discuss the role of the heads/directors of departments as they stand out as the most important factor when solving WLB dilemma. The basic information about WLB instruments in the Czech Republic is their non – institutional character.
Chapter focuses at process of implementation of selected equal opportunity measures in the context of Czech research and science. Among successfully implemented policy measures observes also those ones that shall be admitted in near future and highlightes the currently non – accepted ones.
