Hlavním cílem projektu je studovat rozdíly ve fungování regionů, které v tomto projektu chápeme jako jejich schopnost reagovat na sociální, ekonomické a politické změny, které zasahují českou společnost v období post-komunistické transformace, prohlubující se evropské integrace a vzrůstajícího vlivu globalizace, a analyzovat příčiny existujících rozdílů. Soustředíme se na tři hlavní typy potenciálních vysvětlujících faktorů: politickou kulturu, sociálně-ekonomické a institucionální faktory. V prvním kroku zmapujeme ekonomické, sociální a politicko-kulturní rozdíly mezi regiony České republiky. Poté identifikujeme hlavní aktéry na regionální úrovni, a prostřednictvím sociologického šetření analyzujeme jejich sociální, politické a ekonomické zázemí, hodnotové orientace a preference, pokud jde o hlavní směry rozvoje jejich regionu a fungování regionálních institucí. Provedeme srovnávací analýzu fungování regionálních institucí, a také sekundární analýzy dat z výzkumů veřejného mínění shromážděných v Sociologickém datovém archivu se zaměřením identifikaci meziregionálních rozdílů v politické kultuře populace. Shromážděná data nám umožní analyzovat vzájemné vztahy mezi fungováním regionálních politických institucí, chováním a preferencemi regionálních politických elit na straně jedné a ekonomickým, sociálním a politicko-kulturním kontextem, v němž se tyto nové regionální instituce utvářejí na straně druhé.

Author emphasizes the importance of the spatial dimension of the social phenomena and indispensability of paying attention to that in empirical reasearch in social sciences. The content of the thematic issue of the journal is then summarized.
The article represents the results of empirical research aimed at the analysis of potential relationships between thelevel of social capital, the level of economic development and government performance in the Czech regions. The results of analysis do not support hypothesis about the positive correlations among the observed characteristics of regions.
The authors try to answer the question of whether the regional governments (both its elected and the administrative parts) in the Czech Republic function similarly or whether they vary in terms of performance. And if they do vary, how structured and how large are these differences. The analysis is based on indicators and on an aggregate index of regional government performance created by the authors.
This article deals first with the relative affordability of owner-occupied housing in Prague compared to the situation in the Czech Republic in general. The relative position of Prague in this region is then assessed in a cross-national comparison and determined to be specific. The article’s main objective is to uncover the main demand factors behind the high prices and the low affordability of owner-occupied housing in Prague.
This study seeks answers to three fundamental questions: Who were the members of the regional political elites elected in the first regional elections in the year 2000; has the structure of the regional political elites undergone significant change after the elections in 2004, and what are the reasons for the detected changes? For that purpose we analyzed the data from a broad empirical survey among the regional elites, along with the results of the regional elections in autumn 2004.
This article tries to answer how government performance can be measured. Possible approaches can be dividend into four groups: approaches using indicators of the socio-economic development in the governed area, approaches measuring government performance by means of a subjective evaluation, approaches focused on procedural and institutional effectiveness and the quality of government performance and approaches measuring government performance with the aid of aggregate indexes.
