This paper examines the relationship between electoral systems and female political representation in post-communist states. West European research has suggested that more women are elected in proportional representation systems (PR) than in majoritarian ones, and points out PR’s characteristics (district magnitude, electoral thresholds and closed party lists) as the main explanatory factors. I find that unlike western democracies, post-communist states do not follow these presumptions. Neither basic electoral type nor the characteristics of PR systems explain low women’s representation in national legislatures of post-communist states.
