Abstrakt:
This talk elaborates a theoretical vocabulary for doing power analysis in sociology that is derived from a tradition of social thought running from G.W.F. Hegel through W.E.B. Du Bois and into the present. The vocabulary is offered as a way to examine aspects of power and the organization of agency in social life that are occluded by current sociological theories of power (e.g. field analysis, intersectionality, network analysis, and Foucauldian approaches). Via reference to the author’s own analysis of the early U. S. empire’s expansion west in the 18th century and also to certain classic explanations in historical sociology, a research program is proposed on the comparative analysis of chains of power and their representation.
Isaac Ariail Reed works in social theory, historical sociology, and cultural sociology. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University in 2007. He is currently Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia. His publications include Interpretation and Social Knowledge (University of Chicago Press, 2011).
