Away from Europe’s top football leagues, migrant players are often subjected to short-term contracts, poor housing conditions, isolation and the ever-present risk of premature career endings due to injuries. In this presentation, I will analyze my “struggles” to get closer to Brazilian migrant football and futsal players’ worldviews in Central and Eastern Europe. I will not only discuss the methodological issues I have been facing so far in my PhD research, but I will also analyze the importance of religion, bodily discipline, and players’ gendered identities. Mainly targeted to researchers interested in doing ethnography, my presentation will also discuss some issues concerning my subjectivity and the place of my personal history in doing sports studies.
