The objective of this sociologically-oriented project is to encourage the development of the following processes: a) implementation of binding European standards for equal opportunities policies for men and women in various spheres of social life, b) political and civil acceptance of equal opportunities policies, c) social acceptance of these policies. The core of the project is the analysis of institutional, social and civil issues related to the position of women in Czech society.

Paper is focused on changes in Czech obstetrics. At the end of 1990s they have started to be discussed not only by professionals but also between professionals, mothers and nongovernmental organizations. The discussion stressed differences between motherŽs childbirth experience, differences between childbirth practice of various childbirth hospitals and tendencies to professionalize midwives.

This chapter deal with men's and women's roles in the contemporary Czech family, the shifts of these roles during times, inequalities of the division of labor and division of duties in a private sphere. Gender inequalities are discussed to the relation to the gender contract in the family.
