The book The Sexualised Reality of Labour Relations (Sexualizovaná realita pracovních vztahů) is the outcome of a sociological study of gender harassment and sexual harassment that was conducted by the Gender & Sociology Department at the Institute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
Introductory chapter of the book puts the phenomenon of sexual harassment and harassment based on gender into context of theories of justice and theoretical gender approachs towards social inequalities. The author further focuses on gender discrimination on labour market and on issue of unequal distribution of symbolic power between men and women.
The chapter by Marie Čermáková is based on the public opinion research about harassment and sexual harassment at the workplace especially between employees with a focus on a context and types of working ambiance and an occurrence of this phenomenon. Concretely, the text focuses on the analysis of interpersonal relations at the workplace with respect to diverse forms of disadvantagedness and harassment based on sex.
Sexual harassment in the workplace is an important issue not just in terms of the seriousness of cases but also in terms of the frequency of incidence and the inadequacy of recourse options. In the cases of sexual harassment the majority of the victims are women, and the majority of the initiators or culprits are men.
The chapter shows the results of a qualitative research of sexual harassment in the workplace. It is based partly on six case studies – biographic narrations of victims, and partly on fifteen semi-standardized interviews with Human Resources managers of different Czech organizations.
The chapter deals with the Trade Unions as the prominent actors in the labour market which should protect employees against diffrent types of discrimination as well as be helpful in solving issues relating to sexual harrasment in the workplace.
The article analyses the most current myths regarding the sexual harassment: e.g. the myth of nonexistence and insignificancy, the myth of irrelevancy, the myth of subjectivity and selfhood, the myth of malfeasence. The negation of these mentioned myths is the aim of the analysis.
This study of the final report on the research project “An Analysis of the Occurrence of the Harassment of Women and Men and Sexual Harassment at the Workplace”, conducted in 2004-2005 and commissioned by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic.
