Sociological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Department of Sociology of the Institute of Sociological Studies FSS CU invite you to the spring cycle of Thursday sociological seminars.

This seminar will present an eponymous recent publication by the author, which sets off from the discussion of four different concepts: disenchantment, secularisation, post-secularism, and re-enchantment, analysing their theoretical entanglements and problematising their applicability to recent and contemporary social realities in formerly socialist Europe. It will also offer a conceptual tuning of re-enchantment, in particular, basing it on both empirical evidence as well as on readings from the now rather rich pertinent scholarship that operationalises this concept. A typology is also presented that illustrates a variety of re-enchanted social phenomena that populate the religious and spiritual horizons of late modern central-eastern Europe.

Alessandro Testa is Associate Professor at the Institute of Sociological Studies, Charles University, where in 2020-2022 he led the ERC CZ project “Re-Enchantment of Central-Eastern Europe”. Prior to this, he was Lise Meitner Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Vienna. His main research fields are Social Anthropology, Cultural History, Religious Studies, and Cultural Heritage Studies, with a focus on Europe (comparatively), and in particular on Mediterranean, Central, and Post-socialist Europe. His research outputs include four authored books, four edited volumes, some 70 peer-reviewed articles in journals and chapters in volumes, and more than 150 talks and conference presentations in 25 countries. .

The seminar is freely accessible for those attending f2f, if you intend to attend online, please fill in your email HERE.
