Social Stratification in Eastern Europe After 1989:
General Population Survey

APPENDIX F

         Czech Republic (and Slovakia)

Because Czechoslovakia was a single nation until 1 January 1993, an integrated set of geographic codes was used for the Czech Republic and Sovakia.

There are eight REGIONS (Kraj) in the Czech Republic, with codes ranging from 31-38. Code 31 refers to Prague, which is treated as a separate region. There are 77 DISTRICTS (okres). Within each region, districts are coded with two digit codes ranging from 1-14. Cities and towns are coded with a seven digit code: the first two digits are the region code, the next two are the district code, and the last three digits uniquely identify each city and town within regions and districts. Code 666 identifies persons living in villages within a district. Code 888 identifies persons living in no permanent place, and code 999 indicates that no answer was given. For Prague, 10 areas of the city are distinguished; these are the DISTRICT codes within the Prague REGION. No small area distinctions are made. District code 00 is used to identify "Prague, not further specified" responses.

There are four REGIONS (Kraj) in Sloviakia, with codes ranging from 51-54. Code 51 refers to Bratislava, which is treated as a separate region. There are 37 DISTRICTS (okres). Within each region, districts are coded with two digit codes ranging from 1-13. Cities and towns are coded with a seven digit code: the first two digits are the region code, the next two are the district code, and the last three digits uniquely identify each city and town within regions and districts. Code 666 identifies persons living in villages within a district.. Code 888 identifies persons living in no permanent place, and code 999 indicates that no answer was given. For the Bratislava region, no district distinctions are made. The CITY portion of the code makes three distinctions. Most respondents are identified as from Bratislava itself, but a few are identified as from the Bratislava region with no further distinction (code 000) and a few as from a suburb (code 002).

The LOC and PLACE variables are coded in the same way as the CITY variable, except that for those who worked or lived abroad, these variables are coded with 7777 plus a three digit country code ranging from 981 to 990. A small number of blank responses were coded -2 at UCLA and a small number of responses identified as "don't know" were coded -7 at UCLA.

The codes are shown below, with the headings in Czech (they are pages from the Czech language documentation of the file.)
