Reforms of sub-national government in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland that were taking place during the 90s and at the turn of the century are briefly described, assessed and compared. Two stages of the reform process are distinguished - reform of the municipal government taking place in the early 90s and reconstruction of the intermediary level at the end of the century. Impact of the EU criteria and requirements on the latter are discussed.

The article presents the results of the analysis of party manifestos, prepared by Czech political parties which were elected to the Parliament in five democratic elections, started with 1990 election. For the analysis and coding of party manifestos was used the methodology developed and used by ECPR Manifesto Research Group (European Consortium for Political Research).

The chapter focuses on the economic policy making between government and parliament. On the beginning there is analysed the legislative framework of this relation, then the division of power between government and parliament, based on the accountability concept. The result of this analysis are demonstrated in the case study on the discussion about the role of the central bank.

The article presents a critical reading of opinion data on work and job values. Three cross-national surveys are used: the ISSP module on Work Orientations, the European Values Study, and the Households-Work-Flexibility survey. In the first part, some methodological problems are described and illustrated through previous research. In the second part, several specific results are displayed. In the third part, the focus is on job satisfaction.

Social stratification and various mobility flows are observed. Social cohesion is indicated by perceived levels of conflicts. Finally, limited expansion of the middle class is stressed as the main failure of the development after 1989.

The article presents the sociological theory of trust of Polish sociologist Piotr Sztompka. In his book Trust: A Sociological Theory (1999) Sztompka offers the summary of existing sociological concepts of trust and attemps to clarify the notion of trust and to categorize it. Finally he constructs his own structural model of social becoming of culture of trust and applies it to analysis of Polish society during transformation.
