Terms the Left and the Right are used as theoretical concepts that serve for simplified description and classification of social reality. At the empirical level it is often intended to find and investigate these concepts in people’s minds. The series of analysis described in the article explains misguidedness of this step when the validity of the left-right political orientation concept is tested and assessed. The analysis is based on the cognitive approaches in survey methodology.
