Studium náboženství sice má v české vědě dlouhou tradici (historie, sociologie, filosofie, religionistika, teologie), avšak dosud nebylo adekvátně zhodnoceno, přestože v mezinárodním měřítku dosáhlo značných úspěchů. Projekt se zaměřil na vývoj české sociologie náboženství ve dvacátém století, v období od emancipace sociologie od filosofie a historie přes postupnou marginalizaci sociologie náboženství v důsledku převahy sekularizační teze a nástupu marxismu až po současný stav. Důležitá přitom byla dvojí kontextualizace dějin této sociologické disciplíny, (1.) ve vztahu k ostatním vědám o náboženství, které zahrnují především studium dějin náboženství, filosofii náboženství, teologii (včetně náboženské sociologie) apod., ale i nenáboženský a protináboženský diskurs (včetně tzv. vědeckého ateismu), a (2.) posouzení charakteru, vývoje a výsledků české sociologie náboženství v mezinárodním kontextu (především vzhledem k sociologii náboženství v USA, Spojeném království, Německu, Francii, Itálii, pro období po roce 1948 také v SSSR a Polsku). Hlavním výstupem projektu se stala monografie, která současně částečně supluje dosud neexistující moderní dějiny české sociologie.
