Academic Duets: on Professional and Private Life in Science

Publikace přináší portréty patnácti párů, v nichž oba partneři pracují ve vědě, výzkumu nebo na vysoké škole. V rámci projektu Akademické páry byly mezi lety 2009 a 2010 provedeny rozhovory, které zastihují akademické páry z různých vědních oborů v rozmanitých životních etapách: od mladých doktorandů s malými dětmi, kteří stojí na samotném začátku vědecké dráhy, přes postdoktorandy a etablované vědce a vědkyně na vrcholu svých kariér, až po páry, které svou profesionální vědeckou kariéru pomalu ukončují a jejichž děti už dospěly a založily své vlastní rodiny. Neobyčejně otevřené výpovědi lidí z různého prostředí vědy a výzkumu tak umožňují nahlédnout z mnoha perspektiv na problematiku ustavování kariérních drah ve vědě, roli rodičovství a hledání rovnováhy mezi pracovním a soukromým životem ve vědecké profesi.

The publication is focused on the issue of dual-career academic partnerships where both partners work in science, esearch or teach at a higher education institution. The fifteen interviews presented in the book are framed by a heoretical-empirical analysis of the problems and barriers facing academic partnerships. Some of the most serious of these include problems related to the combination of work and family life, high geographic mobility and stereotypical treatment. The publication takes a snapshot of couples from various scientific disciplines (natural and technical sciences, humanities and the arts) in various life phases—from young doctoral students with small children at the very beginning of their scientific path, through postdocs and established researchers at the height of their careers, to couples who are slowly wrapping up their research careers and whose children are adults with their own families. The work is based on the joined interview method, that is, interviews conducted with both partners present. The open accounts of people from various science and research environments give us the opportunity to explore various facets of building a research career, the role of parenthood, and seeking a balance between work and private life in the scientific profession.
