Career horizons: Academic trajectories and early stage researchers

There are different expectations related to the speeds, rhythms and geographical dimensions of academic career tracks in various scholarly fields. While we can still observe a tendency to feature academic careers as linear and progressive, they have, in fact, become highly diverse geographically and institutionally. Flexibility and mobility have become buzzwords of successful academic careers, and academic environment a highly competitive place where many insecurities have to be handled...

What are the broader contexts and local specificities of early stage careers in science? What are the career prospects of early stage researchers in the Czech academic environment? What is the role of early stage researchers in the process of knowledge production?

In the Czech context the debate on the early stage phase of academic careers (PhD candidates and postdocs) is limited to high numbers of uncompleted doctorates and low financial appraisal. The aim of the workshop is to open the debate more broadly. We are interested in exploring and discussing the relationship between academic positions of early stage researchers, their career prospects and changing institutional contexts of knowledge production.
